If you are like me you try a lot of new things. You've been through all the seed catalogs and your seeds are making their way to you right now. You've probably over done it again in your enthusiasm. You have saved seed from seasons past. You have seeds from failed experiments! You have enough extra to get one newbie gardener going!

This is how it works. All of you veteran gardeners out there, I'm talking to you! I just mailed four newbie gardeners enough extra seeds for all of them to have lush edible gardens this season!

Pick a newbie gardener on hyperlocavore.com and send them a mix of various seeds, flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables to help them get growing this season! It took me about an hour to do this for four different people.

What's in it for you? Well, the pleasure of giving of course! I just mailed four six gardens and I cannot wait to see how my fledgling gardeners grow.

To the newbie gardeners, I can't guarantee you will wind up with a seed packet in the mail. I can't guarantee that you will be sent your favorite fruits, vegetables or herbs. If you receive something you do not intend to plant I only ask that you find someone in the seed swap forum who would like to plant them, and then send them on. This is an experiment! Hopefully a fun and fruitful one!

I have some kale, cilantro, collards, lettuce, and other things that might do well in the bay area.

Hi Newbies!

If you would like to get a garden in the mail, just make your wish plain here. If this works well, an experienced gardener should come along and - hopefully - pick you to mail the seeds to!

Experienced gardeners, just mail your newbie, get their snail mail address and let them know their seeds are on their way!

That's all there is to it!

What a wonderful way to help a neighbor! I'm a newbie and I'd love and appreciate some help with a garden. I live in Middle Georgia (zone 8). I dabble in gardening, but I want to "get serious" about producing food for my family... for health and environmental reasons!

Hi LizM,

You're wonderful to be setting this up! I'm in zone 7A, in Bethesda, just outside DC. Beautiful full-sun and semi-shade light. I've only done flowers so far. I'll give back seed gratefully.

Thanks, Ellen

This is an excellent idea. I'm very much a newbie and would love to grow my own veggies. This year will be my first garden. I'm in Southeast Wisconsin, according to the maps Zone 5b? I think. LOL Lots to learn.

Thanks for doing this!

Kim, I'm fairly new to gardening myself but we have plenty of seeds that I stocked up on. I'd be happy to share them with you. I am also zone 5 and will gladly give you the info I have for our zone, although I am not as north as you are. My garden is protected from severe winds as it's between homes and it has permanent raised beds. If you're doing container gardening, please let me know when you send me your snail mail info so I can supplement the resources I have. WELCOME to the wonderful world of the freshest veggies & herbs...there's nothing else like it!!!

Seeds? Yes Please!! Wow what a great idea! My husband and I have decided to give this vegetable gardening thing a go. We have been buying local for years but I feel lazy buying local. I want to grow my own! We started turning our yard yesterday. I would love some seeds as all I have at this point is dirt and veggie dreams!!! Wish us luck!!

I am an "experienced" gardener in zone 6 with some seeds to share. Mostly standards like lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, spinach, basil and some flowers. I love the square foot gardening method for beginners - it's a great way to get started without getting overwhelmed!!

How do we know which newbie needs a garden?!

This is exciting!!
